Project:
Our installation team recently implemented 3 x 22kW AC EV Chargers and Load Management at Monarco Apartments, Westmead, Sydney.
Background:
Monarco Apartments, located in the prime area of Westmead, Sydney, is a modern residential complex comprising 420 housing units. The estate offers a range of amenities, including a swimming pool, gym, BBQ area, children’s playground, and tennis courts. With a growing number of residents adopting electric vehicles (EVs), the need for efficient and accessible EV charging solutions became apparent.
Objective:
The primary objective was to install three 22kW AC EV chargers to:
- Provide convenient and fast charging options for residents.
- Promote sustainable living within the community.
- Enhance the property’s appeal to potential eco-conscious tenants.
Scope:
Installation of charging infrastructure consisting of:
- 3 x 22kW AC NHP Delta Max chargers
- 1 X NHP EnergySync Load management system
- 1 X NHP Concept Distribution Board
- 1 X Chargefox Network management system
The EVCI scope needed to accommodate the following requirements:
- Due to limited spare capacity in the existing electrical infrastructure, Load Management was required to ensure that EV charging was possible without compromising existing apartments services and avoiding an expensive main switch board upgrade
- There were 3 spaces allocated in the underground carpark, in close proximity to the entrance
- Residents and visitors required a simple system to use the chargers in an equitable manner. It was decided that the Chargefox network would be implemented to facilitate this.
- By implementing the Chargefox network management system, it was necessary to install a 4G comms router to ensure connectivity
- The system required scalability for future expansion and upgrades as EV take-up increases
Implementation:
- Site Assessment and Planning: The project began with a thorough site assessment to determine the optimal locations for the chargers. Key considerations included proximity to power sources, ease of access for residents, and minimal disruption to existing facilities.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Given the requirement for a three-phase power supply to support 22kW chargers, necessary electrical infrastructure upgrades were carried out. This included installing new wiring and upgrading the electrical panel to handle the increased load.
- Load Management: Due to power limitations on site, the NHP EnergySync load management system was implemented. This system balances the electricity usage among the chargers, ensuring that the total power demand does not exceed the available capacity. This approach optimizes the charging process and prevents overloading the electrical infrastructure.
- Installation: The installation was executed by certified professionals to ensure compliance with safety standards. The chargers were strategically placed in the apartment’s parking area, providing easy access for residents.
- Integration with Management Systems: The chargers were integrated with the Chargefox network management software, allowing residents to book charging slots and monitor usage through a dedicated app. This integration also facilitated efficient energy management and billing.
Benefits:
- Rapid Charging: The 22kW chargers offer significantly faster charging speeds compared to standard residential chargers, adding up to 100 kms of range in approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. This ensures that residents can quickly charge their vehicles, even during short stays at home.
- Convenience and Flexibility: Residents now have the convenience of charging their EVs at home, eliminating the need to visit public charging stations. The flexibility of booking charging slots through an app adds to the user-friendly experience.
- Sustainability: The implementation aligns with Monarco Apartments’ commitment to sustainability. By providing robust EV charging infrastructure, the complex supports the transition to cleaner transportation options and reduces its carbon footprint.
- Property Value Enhancement: The addition of EV chargers enhances the property’s appeal, making it more attractive to potential tenants who prioritize eco-friendly amenities. This can lead to higher occupancy rates and increased property value.
Government Support:
The project received funding from the NSW Government through their EV fast
charging grants program. This grant provided financial assistance for the purchase and installation of the chargers, making the project financially viable and supporting the broader goal of creating a world-class EV charging network across the state.

Key facets of a successful project:
- It starts with the owners corporation. There needs to be alignment in values and the desire to embrace and support the implementation of electric vehicle charging.
- It is then necessary to clearly define the objective of the charging infrastructure. How many residents require charging and what is the projection for EV users within the complex? What are the power limitations that exist and how can they be mitigated or enhanced to achieve the desired outcome? This can be achieved by introducing trusted partners to give advice on options and possibilities.
- Finally, the project plan is created in consultation with all stakeholders to ensure a successful outcome. Collaboration between these stakeholders is another essential element to ensure success.
Conclusion:
The implementation of 3 x 22kW AC EV chargers at Monarco Apartments has been a resounding success. It has not only provided residents with a valuable amenity but also reinforced the complex’s commitment to sustainability. The project serves as a model for other residential complexes looking to enhance their appeal and support the growing demand for EV infrastructure.
